Gateway takes custody of Alles-Gunasekera Trophy
In a scintillating forty minutes of basketball, Gateway College, Colombo made amends to their defeat in the inaugural encounter to have their first custody of the glittering Alles-Gunasekera Trophy with a 62-57 victory over Royal College at the Henry Pedris Basketball Complex yesterday.
Two players who had a hand in Gateway’s win were their No.4 Chevan de Costa and No.13 Mirtesh Thurairajah who made lighting moves with excellent running feeding the ball to shooters.
Royal started the ball rolling early in the first half but Gateway shot into the lead in the first half 16-11. The second half saw Gateway dominating play to maintain the lead with 34-27. Royal made a come back to the game in the third quarter with speed and well positioned passes but in the mean time Gateway kept on to shoot into the lead with 51-44. The final fourth quarter produced the best brand of basketball when both sides gathering pace with Royal making an equaliser with 55 each with three minutes to go. But at the end Gateway emerged the winner in the second encounter with a close 62-57 victory.
Aaron Fonseka (19), Chenuka Kasturiarachchi (14) and Chevan De Costa (12) were the main scorers for the winning Gateway while Ravindra Jayawardene (12) and Heshan Hansaka (12) played their hearts out for Royal.
In the Under-15 game Gateway College defeated Royal 27-12 and in the Invitation match between Gateway girl cagers and Ladies College, Gateway scored a cake walk 19-7 victory.
