Adin promises something ‘darker’ in “Freddy 3: A New Hope”
When we first met Adin Mathitharan in July, the 27-year-old first time comedian was in his first post Freddy glow. The then newest addition to Colombo’s popular comedy franchise “Freddy” under StageLight&Magic, Adin’s first show was unforgettable to say the least. When he took the stage for the first time as a stand-up comic, it was at Temple Trees to a packed house of over 2000 people, cracking jokes about growing up in a shell shocked, war torn community in the North and East.
Despite his first time jitters and controversial set, Adin made a clear impression stamping his mark as an actor and a comedian. Armed with his own brand of dark, morbid humour wrapped up in a friendly tone and disarming smile, Adin was able to score laughs and create a space to give a voice to a community and generation in a manner yet to be seen on the local stage. In October, you can catch Adin and the rest of Freddy onstage with their newest show- “Freddy 3: A New Hope”.
“I’ve changed a lot since the first show,” he reflects. It didn’t take more than a few days for Adin to become a mini-celebrity around Colombo since Freddy- One Night Stand!, (even being recognized when going out to buy his lunch.) But the buzz has done little to shake the soft spoken comedian’s core and his roots. “It keeps me humble,” he explains, seeing his and his cast mates’ act as a social responsibility they have towards their audiences.
It’s why they have been busy rehearsing for the last few months. “The perception of people is that we will be repeating ourselves” but Adin promises to be much darker than the last show. Now that audiences will be more familiar with his stage alter ego, Adin admits that despite the inner nerves and show jitters “I too am more comfortable now being on stage,” backed by the help of StageLight&Magic stalwarts Siraj Abdul Hameed, Feroze Kamardeen, Sashane Perera and Sanjeewa Weerasinghe.
