The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) on Thursday lodged a complaint with the Bribery Commission against the Principal of a leading Tamil school in Colombo 4, for embezzling school funds. It is learned that about 10 students accompanied the CTU members to hand over the complaint.

The complaint said the Principal, who has been serving the school for over 10 years, had used the School Development funds for her personal benefit. CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the Principal had collected over Rs 5 million from around 80 Grade 1 students for their admission last year.

However, when an inquiry was initiated recently, she had quickly deposited Rs 2.3 million to the School Development account. According to government regulations, schools are not permitted to receive any money from parents for Grade 1 admissions.
“Furthermore, the Principal had joined 3 to 4 classrooms together add converted them into living quarters and resides there with her family,” Mr Stalin said.

The CTU alleged that all this has been done with the help of politicians who have chosen to ignore her activities. – CC
