PLAYS PARADE 2018
View(s):Plays Parade 2018 presented by the Sashi Mendis Studio of Drama and Speech takes on board five plays with casts of students ranging from 12 – 17 years of age. The plays which were devised in the drama class embrace a range of themes. For instance, the pervasive effects of social media on the lives of teenagers is dealt with in the play “Disconnected”, while the “ Dog Walker ” – deals with the importance of holding onto one’s dreams. “Snow Glow and the King” – focuses on a sense of humour, on the importance of childhood play in a day and age where there is undue focus on competitive educational goals. “Kalupan and Friends”- the humorous story of three friends from three different races, who meet in prison, highlights the possibility of racial harmony.
Plays Parade 2018 is yet another collection of devised drama to be presented by the students of Sashi Mendis. According to a statement by the studio, this year’s production will be adjudicated on one day of the performance by an examiner from Trinity College London, under the category, “Plays In Production.” Many devised plays by the students have received distinctions at examinations for Devised Drama with both Trinity College London and with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (Lamda), the statement said.
The students have had an interesting journey creating the plays and preparing for them. The plays which are both entertaining and engaging considering the issues and topics they deal with promise to be an entertaining evening for both adults and youngsters.
Plays Parade 2018 will go on the boards on October 20 and 21, at 6pm at the Punchi Theater. Tickets at the Punchi Theater will be available from October 10 onwards.
