Karapitiya hospital flooded again

View(s):

Last weeks heavy rains wreaked havoc at the Karapitiya Hospital in Galle resulting in the outdoor medical storeroom as well as the equipment room going under water. In the wake of heavy shower, staff at the hospital were seen clearing and cleaning the two rooms in an attempt to salvage medicines and equipment which were not damaged by the flooding.

Unfortunately this is not the first time this hospital has been flooded. During the monsoon last year too, this hospital suffered a similar fate –a result of shoddy work’ with the building constructed at a lower level than the drains. Not surprisingly, flood waters seep into the rooms whenever a heavy shower occurs.

Dr. Jayampathy Senanayaka, Director of the hospital said precautions have been taken to minimise damage in the event the rooms go underwater by stocking the medicines and equipment in special containers. “The drains are clean and are well maintained”. But occasionally during heavy rains, drains tend to overflow causing flooding,” he said. As a result of heavy rains last week several roads in the Galle town too were water logged.

Authorities were not pleased at photos being taken of the affected store rooms
