Four-up Royal take the T.N. Fernando Trophy
Royal College dominated the waters of Beira Lake to win the T.N. Fernando Trophy as Overall winners at the 49th Annual Royal-Thomian Regatta at the Colombo Rowing Club yesterday.
Royal with 38 points won their 4th successive win in this annual encounter to Thomians’ 14 points. The Reid Avenue school’s 38 points came off in winning seven events to two won by the Thomians. The all important A Four Boat race was won by Royal College when they took the lead in the first 150 metres and maintained it to the finish with a time of 3.7mts.
The Thomians came close to Royalists in the final 500 metres but the Reid Avenue lads with more shoulder strength reached the finish with a lead of half a boat length.
S. Thomas’ won the first event of the day when Ashika Rathnaweera emerged winner in the A Scull event. From there onward the Royalists kept on winning all the events. S. Thomas’ College oarsmen made an attempt to come in to the competition by winning the A Double Scull event but the better fancied Royalists never gave a chance to the Thomians to settle down.
