Memon Futsal Tournament on Dec 2
Twenty two teams of the Memon Community comprising of Junior and Senior teams, will compete at the third consecutive WMO Global Youth Wing Far East Chapter Memon Futsal Tournament. The carnival type dual competition will be played at the Futsal World Indoor Courts in Darley Road today (December 2) from 8.00am onward.
The draw took place at the Football House on Tuesday where teams were drawn into their respective groups in the main tournament as well as the junior segment. According to the draw United Kickers, Gunners FC and Renegades are drawn in Group ‘A’. Flamingo FC, Futsal Amigos and Misfits are in Group B, while Colombo Knight Riders, Rebels and 8 Containers are in Group ‘C’. M Boys, United Amigos and Flamingo United are in Group ‘D’.
The junior segment attracted only four teams last year, but this year the response has been overwhelming with 10 teams drawing in. The teams are United Sixers, Predators, Flamingo Juniors, Liverpool FC, Manchester Memons, Forza Sevens, Seven Buddies, The Legends, Memon Knight Riders and Super 8s.
The main tournament will be conducted on a league basis and at the end of the league stage the first two teams of each group will play in the Cup semi-finals. The teams placed third and fourth in the groups will vie for the Plate championship.
The Cup champions will be awarded a cash prize of Rs. 50,000/- along with a trophy and the runners-up will get Rs. 30,000/- plus trophy. The Plate champions and the runner-up will get cash prizes of Rs. 25,000/- and Rs. 15,000/- respectively along with trophies. Special trophies will be on offer for the Best Player and the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament.
This has been one of the many projects conducted by World Memon Organisation (WMO) Global Youth Wing Far East Chapter in terms of fund raising to do social upliftment projects in Sri Lanka. Whilst social projects such as Multi Community Free Health Camp, Providing Immediate relief at Flash Floods, Depression Awareness projects are some of the many mass community benefitting projects done by this organisation. The WMO is headed by Saad Iqbal, with the secretary being Sajeeth Ilyas and Dhaiyyan Majeed as treasurer. The Project Director is Imran Iqbal who conducted the Draw.
