Last Minute Study Tips

View(s):

Growing up we are often told to ‘go and study’. This results in many students hiding phones or magazines between pages, or blindly staring into space. Ask the person next to you if they know how to study and you will probably get a blank look, followed by “I don’t think so!”

The pressure to study increases with exams being days away and material being untouched!

Get Comfortable

Find a place that makes you feel happy and inspired. Your study space should be quiet, comfortable and distraction-free. Once you have selected the place, identify as to what time works best for you. Some people work better in the morning. Others work better at night. Study according to what time suits you.

Study every day

By studying a bit each day, you’ll be continually reviewing things in your mind. This will avoid the last minute cramming that most of us excel in!

Plan your time

Set an alarm to remind you of your study plans. Use a planner/ calendar to organise what you are going to study each day. Mark it up with important dates, like exams and assignment due dates. Make ‘to-do’ lists of the things that you need to do. This can be done daily or weekly. Identifiable as to how much of the time you need to complete each task.

Discover your learning style

Know your learning style and study in the ways you learn best. Auditory learners learn by listening. Try reading your notes aloud and discussing them with other people. Visual learners learn by seeing. Use colours in your notes and draw diagrams to help represent key points. Tactile/kinesthetic learners learn by doing. Use methods like role-playing or building models to revise key points.

Review and revise

Regularly quiz yourself on what you have studied. Think of the type of questions that you may get on the exam and answer them

Take breaks

If you are feeling tired and frustrated, take a break. Get away from your study area and do something that you enjoy.

Look after yourself

Eat well, stay hydrated and exercise. You’ll study better if you take care of yourself.
