Bollywood thriller on a toddler trapped in an apartment
‘Pihu’ a critically acclaimed Bollywood film made around a two-year-old girl who is trapped in an apartment is now being screened in theatres in Colombo and the outstations.
Directed by Kapri Vinod and starring two-year-old Myra Vishwakarma as the protagonist, the film won the Grand Prize for Best Feature Film in the International Competition category and the People’s Choice award for Best Film at the 14th Trans-Saharan International Film Festival. Pihu premiered at the 2017 International Film Festival of India in the Panorama section and was screened at the Fajr International Film Festival.
After a tragic incident, two-year-old Pihu (Myra Vishwakarma) is trapped in an apartment all by herself. She has very little food and water, as she’s also cut off from the world outside. Under such dire circumstances, Pihu has to survive and her day-long ordeal forms the crux of the story.
The film story is inspired by a real life incident that took place in a New York apartment in 2017 where a lone child was locked up in an apartment for more than 3 days, surviving on just cereals spilled on floor before being rescued by cops.
Director Vinod Kapri won a National Award for the documentary film ‘Can’t Take This Shit Anymore’ 2014. He made his feature debut with ‘Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho’ in 2015 – a socio-legal satire that received extensive critical acclaim. Before venturing into filmmaking he spent 23 years of his career as a journalist with media organisations like Zee News, Star News and India TV where he produced and directed various documentaries and shows, including those on December 13 Parliament attack and the 2011 Mumbai attack and on anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare.
Released on December 7, “Pihu” is now being screened at MC-Colombo (Superior), Empire Arcrade -Gold, Regal –Colombo and at the outstations theatres Regal-Gampaha and MC Jaffna –Silver.
