The Northeast monsoon is on but the heavy rains being experienced now, especially in the East, are largely due to a low pressure condition in the Bay of Bengal, according to the Meteorological Department.

Duty meteorologist Nadeeka Ranaweera said the low pressure formation in the Bay of Bengal was moving towards the southeastern parts of the country and, as a result, the Southern, Eastern and Uva Provinces and Polonnaruwa in the North West Province will experience intermittent heavy thundershowers.

Evening showers are expected in the Western, Central and Sabaragamuwa Provinces and Galle and Matara in the Southern Province.

Meanwhile, foggy conditions will prevail in several areas across the country during the next couple of days, she said.

The Department advised people to stay indoors and avoid coming in contact with lightning and thunder. Fishermen are advised not engage in fishing activities, as the wind speed in the seas off the Western and Northwestern coasts could increase upto 50kmph.
