The creation of the faculty is a part of the vision and strategy to become a health sciences destination for students, academics and research, allowing Sri Lankan students to gain quality higher education opportunities locally. The Faculty of Health Sciences will deliver a range of challenging, research-focused, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes all taught in the context of world-leading research environments. The new faculty brings together the three Ministry of Higher education (MoHE) /University Grant Commission(UGC) approved degree programmes for the year 2019.

BSc (Hons) in Industrial Pharmaceutical Sciences, BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences and BSc (Hons) in Cosmetic Sciences will be offered under two departments, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Department of Biomedical Sciences.CINEC will be the first to offer degrees in BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Sciences and BSc (Hons) in Cosmetic Sciences in Sri Lanka. All the three proposed degree programmes will include laboratory facilities, industrial trainings, field visits and six-month internship programmes at reputed healthcare institutes and medicinal drug and cosmetic manufacturing companies. With modern infrastructure and experienced, internationally exposed lecturing panel, the faculty offers education opportunities to students who have gained three passes at the GCE A/Lexamination.

These degree programmes are scheduled to commence from February 2019 and the students now can start to register by contacting us. CINEC also has plans to attract students from overseas and in particular from South Asian countries. In addition to the two existing departments, the new faculty will comprise of a Department of Nursing, Department of Basic Health Science, Department of Physical Science and a Department of Sport Science.Furthermore, the CINEC is planning to start health science degree programmes affiliated with recognised foreign universities as well.

We have well noted the development of the health industry in Sri Lanka with local and foreign investors taking an interest in future projects. Given the current shortage of skilled health care professionals in the country, these employment opportunities are likely to go to foreigners. In addition, we hope to retain the students that seek higher educational opportunities in science stream overseas due to lack of opportunities in Sri Lanka. We will be able to contribute to the sustainable progress of Sri Lanka. More specifically we hope to contribute to the goal of making Sri Lanka an international hub for healthcare tourism.

Thus, we took the decision to establish the faculty of Health Sciences as we identified this field as a current requirement. Through facilitating academic opportunities in this area, we hope to produce qualified professionals in the medical and pharmaceutical fields in Sri Lanka to face the increasing demand for such individuals in these fields. The degrees were mainly designed targeting the increasing demand in pharmaceutical and cosmetic manufacturing and the shortage of experts in qualified biomedical scientists. The graduates of these degrees will be highly recognised by the relevant industries and will be offered with high remuneration.
