Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith calls on politicians to uphold the dignity of the poor
View(s):Delivering a message at the Annual Christmas Celebrations at President’s House, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said successive government’s continued to reduce relief provided to the public. He emphasised that when prices were increased, it was the the poor who were hurt most.
“Remember these people should not be forced onto the streets to beg,” he added.
He said the rapidly increasing number of sky-scrapers dotting Colombo City was not a true reflection of the plight of the people.
The Cardinal said the spirit of Christmas was not reflected in the colourful decorations adorning the city’s streets and demanded attention be paid to the upliftment of the poor and oppressed.
President Maithripala Sirisena, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga were among those present at the event.
The choirs of St Joseph’s College and Good Shepherd Convent along with the staff of the Presidential Secretariat and the Navy Band, participated in the carol service.
