During festive season particularly, customer complaints regarding the use of tampered scales by traders abound.

This in turn results in an increased number of complaints from the public and forces officials to take preventive measures.

During the Christmas season a string of raids carried out in the Weligama and Matara areas resulted in around 35 traders being taken into custody for using scales which were either tampered with or inaccurate.

The suspects were subsequently released on bail and are due to appear in Court next month.

However it is reported that the number of complaints this festive season has been relatively low.

A regular patron of Manning Market said while customers pay for a kg of goods, in reality they receive a mere 700 – 800 grams.

He complained that it was extremely rare for a customer’s complain to be followed up or the trader taken to task.
