Delay in appointing Principals to national schools: CTU

Interviews for the Principal’s position in 353 national schools, stalled due to the 51-day impasse in the country’s governance, are still being delayed. The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said that candidates who had been requested to appear for an interview before the dissolution of the government in October are yet awaiting their appointments.

CTU General Secretary, Joseph Stalin said that around 303 vacancies exist for the post of Principal in national schools. At present, the schools are administered by Acting Principals appointed by the Education Ministry. It is learnt that in the last six years, attempts to fill Principal positions in national schools have been scuffled by authorities. In 2012, 96 appointments for the post were barred, and in 2015 the move to fill 212 vacancies was stalled.

“We call on the Government to immediately continue with the interviews and fill the existing vacancies with legitimate staff,” Stalin said. (CC)
