The Government is to revive a stalled project to issue free tabs to GCE (A/L) students, an Education Ministry official said. To implement the project, Rs. 4 billion is to be allocated in the upcoming budget.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said they hoped to provide 195,000 tabs so that students can benefit from technology in their education. “We had made preparations to enable children to use technology for certain subjects like Science, English, Mathematics and History. The plan was to have e-books for the students to easily follow their lessons,” he said. He added that Sri Lankan students should be on par with international standards.

The UNP, in its election manifesto, had pledged to provide tabs to students, but this was stalled by short-term Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe who said there was no system to protect children from visiting unsuitable sites. President Maithripala Sirisena had proposed a pilot project. - Damith Wickremasekara
