Manufacturing Engineers focus on the design and operation of integrated systems for the production of high-quality efficient competitive products. These systems may include computer aided and automated manufacturing systems, industrial robots, machine tools, and materials-handling equipment.

HRMI offering 10 Engineering Fellowships to students enrolling in the January 2019 intake:

What does the Fellowships involve?

  • 6 months paid Internships at leading manufacturing sector institutions
  • Guaranteed job placement
  • Multi sectoral training to enhance exposure to different types of manufacturing organisations

How are the students selected for Manufacturing Engineering Fellowships?

Students should fulfil the minimum entry requirements for the Pearson BTEC DUAL HND in Manufacturing and General Engineering

Students should have participated in sports, extra or core curricular activities in school or community related activities

Age: Below 23 years

For the first time in Sri Lanka, a Pearson BTEC DUAL HND in Manufacturing and General Engineering is offered at HRMI – Faculty of Engineering. This is equivalent to the first 2 years of a Bachelor of Engineering Degree.  PEARSON is the largest qualification awarding authority in UK with a presence in over 110 countries. Pearson qualifications (previously known as Edexcel) are recognised & respected by universities, academics, employers and professional institutions throughout the world.

Manufacturing engineers have a great demand in Sri Lanka as well as in the Middle-East. They are also included in the demanded skill category for migration to Australia, New Zealand and Canada and paid fancy salaries. The tendency of employing technically qualified candidates is amply seen in all sectors including Textiles and Apparels, Logistics, Plantations, Electronics, Pharmaceuticals and FMCGs. Manufacturing Engineers are employed in jobs relating to Sustainability, Maintenance and Project Management as well as in Design, Research & Development.

Manufacturing Engineers work as Factory Managers, Production Managers, and Maintenance Managers and often hired to:

  • Automate manufacturing facilities through computer integrated technology
  • Design manufacturing processes to reduce cycle times and costs whilst improving product quality
  • Develop the most effective and efficient production layouts and systems
  • Develop and implement modern techniques such as lean manufacturing, six-sigma, modular systems or Toyota Production Systems.
  • Contribute to innovation and new product development process and in the introduction of ‘green’ concepts for sustainability.

As a manufacturing engineering student at the Faculty of Engineering at HRMI you will be engaged in design and development initiatives during the internship training and research assignments. The Dual HND Curriculum includes many disciplines of Engineering, including Production, Quality, Process, Maintenance, Lean, Electrical, Electronic and Digital Technology. The curriculum prepares engineering students to plan, design, build, install and operate competitive production systems for discrete manufacturing as well as process manufacturing.

The Dual HND in Engineering comprises of 270 credits, 1800  Guided Learning Hours (GLH) and a  Total Qualification Time (TQT) of  2,700 hours. Students could pursue this course on Part-time basis over a 2 year duration. The Units of Study includes, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing Technology, Lean Manufacturing, Production Engineering for Manufacture, Maintenance Engineering, Quality and Process Improvement,  Engineering Design, Engineering Maths, Engineering Science,  Engineering Management, Utilisation of Electrical Power, Electrical, Electronic and Digital Principles, Managing a Professional Engineering Project, Further Mathematics, Sustainability, Professional Engineering Management and a Research Project.

The Assessment Methodology will be Examinations, Assignments, Projects and Presentations. All non-working students under the age 24 years will have an option of undergoing an INTERNSHIP TRAINING of 6 months duration attached to a reputed company engaged in manufacturing.  Entry Qualification: GCE (A/L) 2 Passes in Maths / Science / Tech stream with English & Maths at O/Ls. On completion of the HND, students can progress to the FINAL year of a BEng (Hons) or BSc (Hons) Engineering degree with many universities in UK or seek advance entry pathways for Universities in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and in several other countries. At HRMI, students have a specific pathway to the FINAL year in BSc (Hons) Engineering degree with University Northampton – a Gold Ranked University by UK Government. Thus the entire degree could be completed in Sri Lanka. Students also have the option of completing the final year at the University of Northampton in England.
