Theekshana spins St. Benedict’s to victory
Sri Lanka youth player and right-arm spinner Maheesh Theeskshana ended with a match figures of 11 for 87 runs to lead St. Benedict’s to a comfortable innings and 43-run win over Maliyadeva in the Under 19 inter-school cricket encounter concluded at Kurunegala yesterday.
The second day’s play saw Maliyadeva, in reply to St. Benedict’s score of 291 for 9 declared were bowled out cheaply. Resuming from their overnight score of 37 for 1, the home team could muster as little as 129 runs in their first innings as Maheesh Theekshana and Malinda Perera ran through the innings sharing seven wickets between them.
Maliyadeva made to follow on with a deficit of 162 runs, found Theekshana too hot to handle as he and Malinda ran through the innings. Theekshana picked up seven second innings wickets while Malinda took the remaining three to bowl hosts out for 119 runs.
Meanwhile St. Peter’s batsman Santhush Gunatileke continued his batting prowess when he cracked his third successive ton within seven days.
Santhush who made an unbeaten 252 against Ananda last weekend, followed it up with a knock of 103 against Lumbini MV on Wednesday before hitting an imposing 123 against St .Sebastian’s.
In another match Josephian Salinda Seneviratne was the cynosure of all eyes as he finished with a match bag of nine for 110 in their U-19 school cricket encounter against Royal College ended in a draw at Darly Road.
Salinda who picked up six wickets in Royal’s first innings for 63 runs, added three more in the second innings for 27 runs to leave Royalist’s reeling at 51 for 4 at stumps.
In response to Royal’s first innings score of 240 for 9 declared, hosts ended their innings on the same score for the loss of eight wickets. Dineth Jayakody (74) and Sheran Fonseka (53) shared 65 runs for the third wicket to propel Josephians score. Jayakody’s hit 11 boundaries and two sixes in his imposing half century while his partner had nine hits to the ropes.
Royal’s first innings score was decorated with two half tons made by Bhagya Dissanayake (88) and Pasindu Sooriyabandara (63) on day one of their traditional encounter.
Kalutara MV was home for tea thanks to Avishka Lakshan who ended with a match bag of 9 for 79 paving the way for his side to outclass home town rivals Holy Cross Kalutara by six wickets in the match concluded at Kalutara yesterday.
