IPS: Research Proposals for SK Memorial Research Grant
View(s):The Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS) is calling for proposals for the Saman Kelegama Memorial Research Grant 2019.
The Saman Kelegama Memorial Research Grant is an annual, merit-based grant awarded to an outstanding undergraduate studying in a university in Sri Lanka. The grant aims to promote policy entrepreneurs amongst undergraduate students by encouraging policy relevant, rigorous and innovative socio-economic research. The Saman Kelegama Memorial Research Grant is financed by a fund created by the IPS, the research agency said in a media release.
The grant is open to fourth year undergraduate students studying economics or a related subject in a University Grants Commission approved university or higher education institute in Sri Lanka.
The beneficiary will be awarded a one-time research grant of Rs.150,000 to carry out the proposed research and a three-month internship at the IPS. The recipient will be able to seek guidance from senior researchers and benefit from IPS resources to complete the proposed study during the internship.
The grant was established in 2018, to honour Dr. Saman Kelegama’s legacy of independent research and public policy engagement in the arena of socio-economic development in Sri Lanka and the wider South Asian region. Through the grant, IPS intends to honour Dr. Kelegama – who was the Executive Director of the IPS from 1995 to 2017 – and his role as an eminent economist, policy advisor and public policy advocate by fostering independent research nationally. The first Saman Kelegama Memorial Research Grant was awarded to Thisali de Silva, a student of the University of Colombo. The proposal must be e-mailed to nilmini@ips.lk in word format, on or before February 15, 2019, IPS said.
