Sri Lankan cinema turns 72 while NFC reaches 47

The 72nd anniversary of Sri Lankan cinema and the 47th anniversary of National Film Corporation (NFC) will be celebrated tomorrow, January 22 at the NFC premises.

The country’s cinema is said to have started in 1947 with the release of ‘Kadawunu Poronduwa’ (Broken Promise) while the late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s government initiated the NFC in 1972.At the event, special felicitation will be made to wellknown cinematographer Donald Karunaratne and a book on his works will be release along with a magazine on cinema.

At the end of the event, a new copy of ‘Sujatha’ film produced by K. Gunaratnam for Cinemas in 1966 will be released. Upgraded with 2K digital technology, the film was directed by T. R. Sundaram and D. V. Chari.
