Galle CC hits 142
View(s):Galle Cricket Club on its 142nd Anniversary, celebrated it with a well attended members’ get together recently. Air Vice Marshal Ravi Arunthavanathan (retd.) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He had played for Richmond College, Southern Combined Schools and the Air Force.
He was also the Tournament Director of the first ever ICC tournament organised in Sri Lanka – the Under-19 Youth World Cup in the year 2000 where 16 countries participated. During his tenure as the President (1996 to 2001) Galle International Stadium came into being with the Test Match with New Zealand played in June 1998.
He took over as the President from Ana Punchihewa, then incumbent President SLC and handed over to Jayantha Dharmadasa, a Chairman of the Interim Committee.
After the Tsunami disaster as the Patron of the Club, along with Jayantha Dharmadasa got it back to what it is today.
Also in the photograph is Galle CC Senior Vice President Shanthilal Abeygunawardhana and its General Secretary Gajaba Pitigala. Incumbent President Kumar Samarasinghe and the Organising Committee should be complemented for the grand show put on.
