What began as a passion four years ago has now become a profession for Mahesh Thabrew – a woodburn artist in Colombo. Having started off as a budding artist at Devananda College in Ambalangoda, Mahesh showed great potential in the art of stage designing since 2007.

As a result, he was subsequently crowned the Best Set Designer at the National Youth Drama Festival in 2009 and also at the State Drama Festival last year. Mahesh sells his artworks in the hopes of collecting funds to achieve his goal of venturing into the field of installation art.

“Each installation art site costs Rs 600,000,” he says adding that he hopes to setup an installation on the theme of “Humanity.” Aside from his art, Mahesh has a soft spot for music and performs regularly in a band called ‘Happy Journey’ alongside his friends. Mahesh will exhibit his work today at the Kala Pola open-air art exhibition.
