Gateway Colombo continues its supremacy in Football
View(s):Gateway College Colombo retained the Under-18 Inter-International Schools Football Championship for the second year running defeating their sister school, Gateway College Kandy 2-0 in the finals played at the Cooray Park in Welewatta.
Gateway Colombo was unbeaten in the group stages defeating Lyceum Ratnapura 4-0 and Elizabeth Moir 2-0. They overcame Stafford International School 2-1 in the quarter-finals before winning a hard fought semi-final against Lyceum Panadura 4-3 on penalties after it was 1-1 at full time.
In a repeat of last year’s Under-20 International Schools final, Gateway Colombo once again faced off against Gateway Kandy winning the final comfortably with a score of 2-0. Both goals were scored by captain Binitha Chandrasena, who was Gateway’s top scorer in the tournament with six goals.
Colombo Gateway’s deputy skipper Samunu Kaggodaarachchi, who consistently controlled the game from midfield, was adjudged as Player of the Tournament, whilst Aaqib Imthiyaz was named as Goalkeeper of the Tournament for the second year running.
