The programme comes in the wake of the ministry trying to develop the nearest school as the best school.

According to the Education Ministry, the Northern Province has the most schools with less than 50 students, with 275 such schools located in the province.

The Central Province has 240 such schools while Sabaragamuwa Province has 230.

The list of schools with less than 50 students in other provinces are as follows: Southern Province – 125, Eastern Province – 141, North Western Province – 133, North Central Province – 111, Uva Province – 158 and Western Province – 73.

Ministry officials said they will be taking steps to close down these schools and relocate the students to other schools located close to their residences.

Out of the 10,194 schools islandwide, 9,841 come under Provincial Education Ministries. There are 353 national schools which come under the purview of the Education Ministry.
