A counsel appearing in a habeas corpus case for the parents of three missing youths told the Jaffna High Court this week that the petitioners’ objective was to know the whereabouts of their sons — and not to obtain death certificates from the Government.

Counsel K. Guruparan made this remark in response to Deputy Solicitor General S. Gunasekara’s suggestion in court that the parents could apply to obtain death certificates for their missing sons.

Objecting to the statement, Mr Guruparan told Judge A. Premshankar that the petitioners’ objective was not to obtain death certificates, but to know whether their children were living or dead and what happened to them.

The Navatkuli Army Camp’s then Commanding Officer, Lt. Duminda Keppetiwalana, the Army Commander and the Attorney General have been cited as the respondents in the case.

The judge ordered both parties to file written submissions on March 18.
