Sri Lanka’s Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce has welcomed the budget in the context of the empowerment of female entrepreneurs.

In a statement, its chairperson Chathuri Ranasinghe said that it was “heartening to note, that, the budget incorporates many a proposal to achieve gender equality, empowering the women entrepreneur to be an equal contributor to the economy of the country.”

She was also referring to the proposals on legislation to enable flexible working hours and work from home concept for women; maternity payment rebates; more representation of women on board positions; Enterprise Sri Lanka to be expanded to provide concessionary loans to young entrepreneurs; and guidelines and regulation for formation and function of child cares centres  etc.

“This is a women entrepreneur-friendly budget. The successful implementation and sustainability will elevate the rate of female labour force participation from its present rate of 36.4 per cent to the targeted figure of 40 per cent by the year 2020,” she added.
