Motorist writes to IGP, alleging harassment
View(s):A motorist has requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to inquire into an incident where he was allegedly ill-treated by a police driver in front of the Police Hospital.
The complainant, Thilan Senaratne, had stated that the incident occurred on Friday (8) morning while he was driving along the Nawala-Narahenpita Road from Nawala towards Narahenpita .
Mr Senaratne had been waiting for the traffic to clear and was just moving forward when a vehicle which was coming from the opposite direction had cut in front of him with the intention of entering the Police Hospital, his complaint alleges.
Mr Senaratne states that he almost collided with the vehicle and had thus spontaneously tooted his horn.
The driver of the car that had cut in front of him had then stopped his vehicle in the middle of the road, blocking Mr Senaratne’s vehicle. The driver, who was in police uniform, had got down from the vehicle and abused Mr Senaratne in Sinhala, he states.
The Police driver had told him that inside the car was a senior officer’s wife and abused him for tooting the horn.
A female who was in the vehicle had then allegedly got out and spoken to one of the traffic police officers who was nearby and proceeded into the Police hostpial.
The policemen had tried to charge Mr Senaratne for a traffic offence, but due to the intervention of another police officer on duty he was able to proceed after being delayed for about 20 minutes.
A complaint has also been made to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Ajith Rohana and President’s Secretary Udaya Seneviratne.
