2013 English O/L ‘B’ becomes ‘A’ on Apex Court order

The Examination Department (ED) last week, in keeping with the Supreme Court (SC) Order of January 2019, has dispatched the amended version of a Result sheet to an Ordinary Level student who sat the exams in 2013.

The Results sheet was amended to read her English Language grade as ‘A’, following the student challenging her results in the SC.

The student, Kavitha Sadmini Weerasinghe of Visakha Vidyalaya, who got 8 ‘A’s and 1 ‘B’, had requested for a re-scrutiny of her English Language results, for which she got a ‘B’.

The ED, however, delivered the same results, which had led to her seeking redress at the SC in 2015.

In case No. SC/ 324/2015/STFR, the SC, in 2018, had ordered a re-evaluation of her English answer script by an independent team.

The independent assessor had found that a zero mark had been given for an essay question the student had attempted. Following an assessment on the answer to that particular question, it had been determined that the answer had been done well and a ‘zero’ marking was not warranted.

It is learned that, she already had 74% for the subject and, with one more mark to qualify for grade ‘A’, the ED had upgraded her marks.

The parents claim that the ED mistake has affected their child’s education, depriving her of good results in the Advance Level examinations. The student, who is presently following a Bio-science Degree at Ruhunu University, wishes to continue her studies at Kelaniya University.

Their request to the University Grants Commission (UGC) to have her transferred to Kelaniya University, to follow the same course, has been turned down.

The mother, Chandrani Wijegunawardena holds that the government should consider compensating the wrong done to her daughter, by giving her a place in a university nearer home.

“It is only right that they make amends by granting a place closer to home,” she said. - CC
