Empowering School Level Leaders in IoT

INCOHST 2019 was an IoT (Internet of things) event organised by Nawaloka College of Higher Studies to create awareness about IoT among Sri Lankan school students and also to make a stage for Young innovators to invent IoT based solutions, catering different social needs. The event was held successfully for the second year running.

The event was sponsored by the Swinburne University of Technology, Technology support by Ideamart and also supported by the Sunday Times and the Education Times as print media sponsors.

INCOHST 2019

A crowd of more than 200 students attended a workshop conducted by NCHS together with Ideamart on the 20th of February at Nawaloka College Auditorium. The event was presided by the top in the field in Sri Lanka, Supun Weerasinghe, Group CEO-Dialog Axiata PLC, famous Lankan YouTuber, Chanux Bro, as well as Kavinga Yapa Abeywardena, Lecturer, Department of Information Systems Engineering.

Following the interactive workshop, the final event was held on the 9th of March at the Ambassador Nawaloka Auditorium. More than 13 schools participated and unique innovations were created. Some of the innovations included a smart train detector, bionic arm, air pollution measuring devise, a smart dustbin to segregate garbage and many other exciting items.

WINNING ENTRY: THE SMART CITY

Smart City with security system and IOT control

“We invented a smart city! In this city there was a Smart Railway system, Smart Home, Smart power saver, Smart car and smart fan. In this smart home there was a security system. And we can turn off lights remote control assistance and other security features were there. There was a Fingerprint Sensor in the gate of the door, there was a RFID on the door and the door and gate can be controlled by phone easily” the excited winners explained.

They explained that the city was made ‘smart’ through the use of IoT and google assist.

EVENT STUDDED WITH DIGNITARIES AND INDUSTRY EXPERTS

The event was well attended by dignitaries, stake holders and IoT enthusiasts. The panel of judges were Dr. (Eng.) Lalith Liyanage – Chief Executive Officer, Ministry of Defence, Rekha Weerasooriya – General Manager, CE Transformation and People Development Group Service Delivery, Malinda Rathnayake – Assistant Manager, Ideamart Operations and IOT Dialog Axiata PLC, Dushyantha Ranasinghe – Senior Lecturer, NCHS.

In addition, the event was graced by Mr. Victor Ramanan – Deputy Chairman/CEO, Ms. Kathleen Drew – Director, Foundation & Pathways Programmes, Swinburne University of Technology and Dr. Alan Robertson- Dean of Studies, NCHS as Chief Guest.  The INCHOST team, Ideamart team, NCHS staff, Schools with teachers were also at the event.
