IGP orders probe on alleged police harassment
View(s):The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has ordered an investigation into a motorist’s complaint regarding the alleged police harassment that occurred recently near the Police Hospital in Narahenpita.
Accordingly, Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Colombo South Division, Roshan Dias has been directed to conduct an inquiry and take appropriate action.
A police team appointed by the OIC sent to the Narahenpita Police has recorded statements from several officers who were on duty in the area during the day of the incident and are tracing CCTV footage from the area, a senior police officer said.
He said they would record a statement from the complainant soon.
The motorist alleges that an officer in police uniform abused him after blocking his car near the entrance to the Police Hospital on March 8 after he tooted his horn at the officer’s vehicle after it suddenly tried to cut in front of him and enter the hospital.
He alleges that the driver told him that the “Director’s wife” was in the vehicle and queried as to who he thought he was to toot the horn at them.
He further claims that a traffic policeman had then come over and tried to book him after speaking to a woman inside the car, who had been referred to by the police driver as the “Director’s Wife.” He said he had only been allowed to go after another traffic policeman intervened.
