The Attorney General’s Department is compiling a further detailed report supporting the request for the extradition of the Central Bank’s former Governor Arjun Mahendran on the instructions given by the President’s Secretary, a Presidential Secretariat spokesman said.

The report would be sent to the Singaporean authorities after Singaporean Foreign Ministry called for further information over the extradition request put forwarded by the government, according to a statement issued by the Presidential Secretariat.  On May 28 last year, Sri Lanka made an official request through the Defence Ministry Secretary to extradite Mr. Mahendran to Sri Lanka.

The first request was sent to the Singapore Foreign Ministry after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) by its submission, to the Fort Magistrate stated that Mr. Mahendran has committed an offence that falls within legal clauses of No 18 in the section 2 of the Extradition Act of Singapore, he should be extradited to Sri Lanka.

Based on that report the INTERPOL has issued a red notice on April 19, 2018, and the notice has also been attached to the extradition request. Meanwhile, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said this was a ongoing process and was being handled at top level diplomatic channels between the two countries.

“There is no finality in this process as of now. I is premature to make a comment on that process at this stage,” a spokesperson said.

Early this week, the Presidential Secretariat rejected news reports suggesting that the Government had failed to submit adequate documents to facilitate the extradition of Mr. Mahendran.
