Premier Wickremesinghe declared open the new Maha Oya bridge costing Rs 651.9 million

The 83-year-old bridge over Maha Oya at Kochchikade which was in a badly dilapidated condition and causing traffic congestion, was this week replaced with the new four-lane bridge.

The new 105 metre long bridge built across the Maha Oya –a perenial river- has now become tourist attraction among visitors to Negombo.

The new bridge is a boon to the thousands of road-users travelling from the Northern Province, the North Central Province and the North-Eastern Province as these roads all converge at this spot when travelling to Colombo.

The project, costing approximately Rs 651.9m. was funded by the Australian government and declared open by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Work on the project commenced on 24 June 2016 and was completed on 24 January 2019.
