Sri Lanka out of semi-finals in SAFF Women’s Championships
View(s):Sri Lanka was ousted from the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Women’s Championships losing 0-4 to Nepal in the semi-finals. Thus Sri Lanka’s chances of being in the final were dashed. The tournament took place from March 12 to 22.
The tournament is in Nepal where six South Asian countries participated.
Sri Lanka took part from B Group. In the first round Sri Lanka beat Maldive Islands 2-0. In the second match Sri Lanka lost to India 0-5 but qualified as Group Runners-up to the semi-finals.
Sri Lanka lost to Nepal 0-4 in the semi-finals. This is the third occasion that Sri Lanka has lost in the semi-finals.
Earlier Sri Lanka qualified in 2012 and 2014.
India beat Nepal by 3-1 to win the title for the fifth time. In the last four tournaments too India proved their prowess to win all editions.
In the first round India beat Maldives 6-0, beat Sri Lanka 5-0 and qualified as Group B Champions for the semi-finals. In the semi-finals India beat Bangladesh 4-0 to qualify for the finals where India beat Bangladesh and for the fifth time in-a-row emerged champions.
A specialty of the tournament is that India have been unbeaten. Only in 2016 tournament the game between India and Bangladesh ended in a nil all draw.
In the first round Nepal beat Bhutan 3-0 and beat Bangladesh 3-0 and qualified as Group B Champs to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals Nepal beat Sri Lanka 4-0 to qualify for the finals.
