Several areas in the Galle District were without water on New Year’s day, with more than 25,000 consumers hit from around 6 a.m. to past 10.30 p.m. that night, hampering new year celebrations.

Among the areas affected were Ahangama, Koggala, Thalpe, Habraduwa, Unawatuna, Bope Poddala and Imaduwa.

The National Water Supply & Drainage Board (NWSDB) office had received more than 2,500 calls complaining about the lack of water.

NWSDB Office Manager K.K.S. Dias said heavy usage during the season, tourist hotels storing water in huge tanks and the drought had affected the supply of water.

He said high elevation areas were the most affected.
