Met Dept. warns against severe lightning and thundershowers
View(s):The Meteorology (Met) Department (Dept) issued a special ‘Weather Advisory’ against severe lightning and heavy rainfall following inter-monsoonal rains amidst reports of five deaths. Met Dept Director Anusha Warnasooriya said there is a high possibility of afternoon thundershowers islandwide. Adding that severe lightning will continue for the rest of the month she advised the public to take precautions against lightning related accidents.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said five lightning related deaths were reported in the first three weeks of April.
The lightning strikes had occurred in Giribewa and Polpithigama in the North Western Province, Chavakachcheri, Uduwill and Puthukuderippu in the Northern Province, Karandeniya and Yakkalamulla in the Southern Province, and Mahara and Gampaha in the Western Province.
DMC Deputy Director Pradeep Koddipli said the public should seek assistance from the local DMC authorities in case of emergencies.
