Amid the overwhelming grief and the carnage on Easter Sunday, some disgraceful thieves relieved the dead of their personal possessions. While health ministry authorities and hospital administrators ignored the safe keeping of personal belongings, degenerates of society went to work, ripping off money and possessions of entire families.

In Katana in Negambo the belongings of a deceased family had been spirited away during the time when funeral rites were conducted.

Janaki Mollegoda, an aunt of the deceased Dnanadari Kurrupuachchi including her late family of five, said that after the funeral rites, a set of knives in the kitchen and flip flops and shoes were missing.

It was a shock to them that belongings had been robbed at a time when memories are only what is left.

Even W I PC Sudaharshani Fernando, a resident of Kadirana at Katuwapitiya said that her son had a new mobile phone and about Rs 75,000 in his wallet. But when his body was found in the morgue, his wallet and phone had been stolen.

“I don’t want the money, I need the wallet and the phone. His identity card and photos are in the wallet. There were photos in the phone, also. Those were the only things left to remember him,’’ she said.

She has filed a police complaint.
