Security in Parliament is being stepped up with foreign assistance following intelligence reports of a possible terrorist attack.

Parliament sources said support has been sought from the diplomatic community to provide required equipment to the complex.

The Sunday Times learns that one foreign country had already airlifted scanning machines, explosives detectors and other hi-tech equipment to detect possible threat from the air. More equipment is due over the weekend.

This follows a series of meetings presided over by Speaker Karu Jayasuriya where the security of parliament was assessed, following the Easter Sunday attacks. Parliament is also upgrading its CCTV cameras as part of the strengthened security measures.

In addition, a Special Task Force (STF) unit is being set up in place of the Police unit currently in charge of the security.

Special security measures will also be put in place for staff and visitors entering Parliament, in addition to changes in parking arrangements.

All security measures will be in place before the next Parliamentary session scheduled for next Tuesday.
