Cyclone Fani, which threatened to hit Sri Lanka moved away to the Indian subcontinent with minimal damage to the country, the Disaster Management Centre said.

Director Pradeep Kodipilli said, according to reports, 26 houses in Vavuniya were damaged while in Hambantota–which was predicted to feel the brunt of the fierce cyclone–three houses were damaged.

Fifteen homes were damaged in Sevenagala in the Monaragala District, while in Ranweligama three houses were completely damaged.

Mr. Kodipilli said those who have been affected will be compensated by the relevant District Secretariats after the damage is assessed at the divisional level with the help of the Grama Niladhari of the affected area.

On Friday, cyclone Fani, one of the most severe storms to hit the region in recent years, slammed into India’s eastern coastline, bringing torrential rains and winds of up to 200 km/hr.

Strong winds were experienced in some areas of Polonnaruwa. Pix by Amila Gamage
