Artificial Intelligence Boosts Sri Lankan Enterprises
ANC School of Postgraduate Education encourages its MBA students to engage in discussions on insightful and trending topics that spark innovative thinking, and in keeping with that, ANC hosted a panel discussion on ‘How Artificial Intelligence is Transforming Businesses’ which was held at the Colombo Hilton Residencies on 4th April 2019. The event featured an eminent panel of speakers and attendees, which comprised of prominent industry professionals and business owners, attracting over 100 participants to experience this invaluable session. The importance of AI and how it can enhance business processes and the bottom line drew many questions, and was enthusiastically received by the audience.
The distinguished panel of speakers boasted a wealth of knowledge with their expertise in multiple related areas. Mr. Indika De Zoysa, Senior Consultant at ICT Agency of Sri Lanka, has over 24 years of experience in solution innovation, integration and market development. He is a member of the Presidential Task Force on ICT development participating in many Sri Lankan government strategic initiatives on ICT development. Mr. Wellington Perera, Director / Chief Operating Officer Enhancer (Pvt) Ltd, is the founder of several software companies and has extensive experience in technology strategy, solution architecture and cloud business models. He has served in the capacity of DPE Director at Microsoft for over 10 years.
Dr. Sidath Liyanage, Senior Lecturer of the Faculty of Computing and Technology at University of Kelaniya, has conducted extensive research in Data Science, Machine Learning and Brain Computer Interfaces. He has served as the President of Sri Lanka Association for Artificial Intelligence and the President of Sri Lankan Academy of Young Scientists. These industry experts provided diverse experiences and know-how on the industrial, government and academic perspectives.
The panel moderator was industry leader Mr. Inthiqab Haddard, Director Business Operations of WSO2 and former MBA alumni of both ANC and UWL, counting over 17 years of experience in Software delivery, Engineering, Risk and Compliance Management, process implementation and revenue operations for brands like Virtusa, Interblocks and HSBC.
The speakers addressed important questions that would help professionals and businesses take advantage of AI and transform their organisations towards an AI future. Here is a rundown of some of the key questions answered at the event:
The key message given by all 4 speakers was that it is imperative that organisations move towards a technologically friendly work place. In particular, the small and medium sector that makes up majority of Sri Lankan businesses can take advantage and not miss out on the benefits of investing in AI technology, as many businesses in Sri Lanka that have adapted AI initiatives are seeing the impact through tangible results and higher margins.
The panelists shared their thoughts saying a positive growth is expected on a global scale where technological advancements of AI could reach $13 trillion in global economic activity in the next decade. However, the disruptive AI technology is a challenging issue faced by all economies around the world and is likely to lead to greater income inequalities as large firms are fast adapting toward an AI future.
There are numerous legal and ethical concerns such as the legal implications, patent laws and intellectual property rights if people manufacture bots for commercial use. There is also the question of how governments can tax bots who will replace many job functions leading to a disruption of employment. Governments may need to revise their entire policies and legal frameworks and these issues are being currently discussed at the national level by the Sri Lankan government, said Mr. Indika De Soyza.
The panel discussion and networking evening was a valuable opportunity to meet other professionals in the industry, strike a conversation with them and share knowledge, ideas and build partnerships that would provide many career and business opportunities.
