The National Vesak Festival will be held in a modest manner at Thotagamuwe Rahula Temple at Thelwatta in Galle on next Friday and Saturday, Buddha Sasana Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said

He said that the government had plans to hold the festival for five days, but had now decided to restrict it to two days, after the Mahanayakes in a joint appeal urged the government to hold the festival in a simple manner, with more religious activities such as Dhamma sermons, Sil and meditation programmes.

Temples have been urged to form security committees with the assistance of the police and the armed forces. Worshipers are urged to avoid carrying bags to temples. Buddhists have also been requested to hoist the Buddhist flag during the Vesak season.
