A motorist was killed after Navy personnel manning a road checkpoint fired at his vehicle after he reportedly failed to stop when ordered to do so.  The incident occurred early yesterday at Hunupitiya in Wattala.

According to a media release issued by Navy, the driver of a Tata Nano car had ignored calls to stop, and run through the checkpoint endangering those on duty.

Police said the seriously wounded motorist, identified as 34-year-old Chamara Dangsara Ransingha, a resident of Wattala, was rushed to a private hospital in Wattala and later transferred to the National Hospital where he died.

A second vehicle, a BMW sedan, which had allegedly failed to stop at the same checkpoint one hour later while heading towards Kiribathgoda, was fired upon by a navy personnel. However, according to the police, no one was hurt and the driver was taken into custody. A breathalyzer test conducted on him indicated he was driving under the influence of liquor, police said. Kiribathgoda police are investigating the cases.
