More Trilingual mixed National schools in future
View(s):The Ministry of Education (MoE) intends to have more trilingual schools in future, to promote ethnic harmony, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam told the Education Times.
He explained that students of all nationalities are allowed to study in any of the 3 Languages.
The Cabinet, earlier this month, approved a proposal for a trilingual mixed National school in Peradeniya, at an estimated cost of Rs 1,141million.
“We started trilingual schools in Kurunegala, Kandy, Colombo and Meerigama, with Cabinet approval,” he said.
He added that the MoE intends to convert other schools into trilingual National schools in the near future.
“Earlier, there were Muslims learning in Buddhist schools and Buddhists learning in Muslim schools, which had changed during previous years,” he said.
Earlier President Maithripla Sirisena initiated a trilingual school at Kaduruwela in Polonnanruwa, under the “Pibidemu Polonnaruwa” development programme.
The school is still under construction, through an Indian grant assistance of Rs 300 million.
The school would provide opportunities to Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim students to learn in a multinational and multi-cultural environment.
