Premier Carrom Academy opens to slicers in Gampaha
View(s):With the intention of giving an opportunity to newcomers to Carrom, the Premier Carrom Academy (PCA) was declared open at Welipillewa in Ganemulla, by the President of Sri Lanka Carrom Federation (SLCF), Parakrama Basnayake. While pledging the assistance of SLCF, Mr. Basnayake stated that Carrom is a board sport with the ability to generate addiction among youngsters, if trained and taught correctly.
“It is healthier and positive to get addicted to a sport such as Carrom, rather than letting our younger generation become idle and become vulnerable to drugs. Sports is a good mode of building character, though it is not be clear if PCA could benefit financially, while their move to promote the sport among youngsters is commendable,” Mr. Basnayake stated.
Carrom Stalwarts, Chammika Wijesinghe, Lalith Hewage and Upali Perera are behind moves to promote the board sport among youngsters in the Gampaha region. The PCA is a brainchild of Major General Rajitha Ampemohotti, President of Sri Lanka Paralympic Committee, who graced the opening ceremony as a Guest of Honour.
An exhibition Doubles Carrom game between Basnayake- Ampemohotti and National players Nishantha Fernando-Chalani Liyanage followed the opening ceremony of the academy.
