Sophisticated new vessel to be built by Colombo Dockyard for Japan
Colombo Dockyard PLC, the shipbuilding arm and ship repair service provider, has broadened its reach to provide preventive and breakdown repairs to handle afloat repairs, said the company’s Managing Director/CEO D.V. Abeysinghe at a ceremony held at the Marina Beach Hotel, Kollupitiya recently.
He said a Professional Rapid Response Afloat Repair Service was launched by the Colombo Dockyard to attend to urgent repairs of ships when ship owners contact them directly.
“We have also formed a subsidiary company called Dockyard Technical Service to provide manpower service for ship repairs under the supervision of Colombo Dockyard trained officers to provide a quality service at a competitive price. This facility will be available in all ports of Sri Lanka and to all customers of the Colombo Dockyard and others.” said Mr. Abeysinghe.
The Rapid Response Afloat Repair initiative was launched, at a ceremony, by chopping a rope with axe as a symbolical gesture by the Colombo Dockyard PLC‘s newly appointed Chairman Hideaki Tanaka, the Managing Director/CEO and the General Manager (Ship Repair Business) K.B.P. Fernando.
Its Chairman Mr. Tanaka said he is optimistic that Sri Lanka will overcome its difficulties following the Easter Sunday attacks soon. Japan will support the ship building and heavy engine industry of the Colombo Dockyard and will build a highly sophisticated vessel for Japan soon. Japan-Sri Lanka has a long history that support each other and Japan will never forget the speech made by the late Sri Lankan President J.R. Jayewardene at the San Francisco Treaty in the early fifties in support of Japan. General Manager (Ship Repair Business) Mr. Fernando said that the idea of attending to urgent ship repairs at sea with a small team occurred to them almost three years ago. The Colombo Dockyard has been in business for 25 years, he said.
