No more evening strolls at seafront promenade

The capital’s only seafront rendezvous area has become a desolate piece of land since the mass murders by Islamic extremists on Easter Sunday.

Families, individuals, young couples, kite flyers, and tourists no longer swarm to the Galle Face Green, which borders tourist hotels and luxury apartment buildings on one side and the ocean on the other side.

Evening strolls at sunset are longer appealing.

Street food vendors who served up popular deep fried local snacks such as isso vadai (shrimp fritters) and naan bread with onion sambal, and various chilled drinks, until the late hours, especially at weekends, have turned off their gas stoves on the dusty green, now marred by the reclamation for the so-called port city being built by the Chinese. No one is selling iced lollies. Small time vendors and hawkers have abandoned the rest and recreational green.

The busy main road bordering the green is devoid of the usual number of vehicles filled with children, youths, the elderly and families as well as tourists.
