View(s):Sachin Dias, who was a member of the National Badminton team that won Sri Lanka’s first medal at the Sudirman Cup held in Malaysia, is a future medal prospect for the country. At the Sudirman Cup, Sri Lanka were Group 3 champions, beating Slovakia, Lithuania and Switzerland.
Dias, Brand Ambassador for Alliance Finance Co. (AFC), partnered Bhuweneka Goonathilake in the Men’s Doubles and was in splendid form. Dias and Goonathilake won their ties, turning it into a memorable tournament for Sri Lanka. They finished overall 21 in the rankings.
The sporting career of 23-year-old Badminton star Dias is being supported by AFC, a respected finance company in Sri Lanka. Dias is now one of the country’s top shuttlers, having taken part in several international meets, including the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Dias counts among his international medals a Silver and a Bronze at the last South Asian Games and the first ever Bronze medal for Sri Lanka from the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in China. In keeping with the social environmental value based business philosophy practised by AFC, his future and career goals have also been carefully designed through a grooming programme culminating in guaranteed employment at AFC, at the end of his Badminton career.
Meanwhile, some impressive performances in the pool by Akalanka Peiris, the 19-year-old Swimming sensation and Brand Ambassador for AFC, was recently adjudged Emerging Sportsman for 2016 and 2017, at the Sri Lanka Schools Milo Colours Awards held at the BMICH.
Peiris, who competed at last year’s Commonwealth and Asian Games, is now the undisputed champion in his age group. He has participated successfully in foreign meets, winning Gold in the 100m Backstroke at the 6th International Sports Games in Russia. He also won 2 Silver medals at the 5th Asian School Games.
