Ceylon Tea value chain to go online soon

Government will be investing approximately Rs.250 million in computerising the entire tea sector value chain.

Sri Lanka Tea Board (SLTB) Director General Anura Siriwardena speaking with the Business Times on Tuesday said that they would be computerising the value system in the tea sector.

This would be carried out by obtaining data from the grower to the end user in a bid to ensure that the entire value chain could be monitored, he explained.

In addition all transactions will also be on this system that would be created through the Rs.250 million allocated for this purpose.

In order to carry out this process, the SLTB has already called for bids to establish this system and ensure all information is available online.

Currently the proposals are at the Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC), Mr. Siriwardena said adding that the system is expected to cover the auction process as well.

However, there is one issue in this respect, in that at present there is no space for online bidding.

“When exporters are ready then we will carry out bids online,” he said adding that the system is expected to get underway by early or mid next year.

Mr. Siriwardena said that the online system is expected to bring in benefits so that information could be available and the entire value chain could be monitored.
