A threewheel driver who had allegedly left a man to die after knocking him down in Wellampitiya was arrested five days after the incident, police said. On Friday, June 14, a construction site employee identified as Athanagoda Ravindra Niroshan (42) was returning home after work around 7 p.m. when he was knocked down by a threewheeler at Wellampitiya. The driver had told onlookers that he would take the injured man to the National Hospital, but instead had left him at a lonely spot and fled, police said.

Police said they had gone to the spot on Tuesday on a tipoff that a body had been found. The victim was identified as resident of Polonnaruwa and a father of two. Judicial Medical Office Dr W.A.C Lakamali who conducted the postmortem examination said the man had died of internal bleeding from injuries sustained to the head.

The threewheel driver, a 34-year-old resident of Maligawatte, was arrested on Tuesday and produced in the Magistrate court on Thursday. He was remanded until July 4.
