Train services normal from today, but strike threat still on track
Train services will return to normal from today, Railways General Manager Dilantha Fernando said yesterday
He told the Sunday Times the unions had informed him that they would operate normal services from today.
Those on strike included locomotive operators, guards, controllers, station masters, and supervising mangers.
The Railways Chief said the unions had told him they would take a decision on their future action in the coming days, but the Railways would also make contingency plans.
A senior Railways official pointed that the unions had called off the strike so that their members could collect their salaries next week.
Train Operating Supervising Managers Alliance Co Convener Lal Ariyaratne said the strike was launched over issues relating to grades and salaries.
He said Railway employees promoted from primary to secondary grade were getting a raise in their salaries, but those who were already in secondary grade and promoted to grade three did not get a salary increase.
