Havies stun champs CH on Day One
Havelock Sports Club delivered a stunning blow when they defeated the defending overall champions CH and FC on the opening day of the Dialog Inter-Club Sevens Rugby Tournament which commenced at the Racecourse Grounds in Reid Avenue yesterday.
The Park Club with a star-studded line-up built up a commanding 19-5 lead in this key game at half time and went on to add the finishing touches as they eventually won by a convincing margin of 33-10.
The Havies in fact, enjoyed a highly successful day as they also went on to defeat Army SC ‘B’ 42-0 and Peterson RFC 62-7 respectively to finish on top of Group ‘A’. Earlier, CH and FC started their campaign with a rousing 50-0 win over Peterson RFC and also had the better of Army SC ‘B’ 56-7.
Meanwhile, Kandy SC were able to top Group ‘C’ with three smashing victories over CH and FC ‘B’ (40-5), Air Force SC ‘B’ (28-12) and Navy SC ‘A’ (29-7) respectively.
CR and FC piled up the highest score of the day when they outplayed Galle RFC 65-0 after leading 41-0 at half time in their Group ‘B’ encounter.
Police SC ‘A’ dominated Group ‘D’ with three morale boosting victories over Malay CC (59-0), Navy SC ‘B’ (33-17) and Army SC ‘A’ (21-14) respectively.
