Colombo University’s ‘Abhina’ a lesson in Education
View(s):‘Abhina’ is a community development project initiated by the 3rd year the Science Union of the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo (UoC) to support Nahinna Kanishta Vidyalaya (Junior School), Dodangoda, Kalutara, with much needed educational and infrastructural assistance.
The project, consisting of 2 stages, commenced in July 2018.
First, a seminar series, focused on Ordinary Level students, was a different approach to the contemporary learning process. The students were extremely enthusiastic to learn and question, to be more of themselves with their new teachers who were sisters and brothers to them more than teachers.
Personal donations meant a lot for the project and special mention should be made of the “Chathurmana” contest winners of UoC, for their generosity in contributing their cash prize to the project. Several fundraising programmes were also conducted along with a musical extravaganza; “Anagathaya” by Wayo band.
The ceremonial opening was held on June 29. The walls were smelling of and shining with fresh paint, all because of the tireless efforts of an entire team. Squeals of joy from the little hearts were definitely for their newly built classrooms which they couldn’t resist the temptation of spending the rest of their scholarly life in.
The project chair of ‘Abhina’, Shehan Alwis, thanked Niyomal sir, Asoka madam and Wansapura sir, Principal Mrs. P. Sinhabahu and DIG Saman Weerasuriya for their strength and support given at all times. “The project was not about money, it was all about giving what you can and what you have to make a simple change. “Abhina” proved that a team, together, can make wonders happen and to utilize that potential for the betterment of humanity that all of us equally belong to,” he said.
